Day 15 – More than 150 book lovers join our virtual read along
It’s not too late to get your copy of Red and the Wolf
Book lovers came from far and wide to take part in the #RNIBReadAlong on Facebook on December 10. We were joined by readers from Italy and Australia, author Amit Patel, an elf and more than a few pets got involved too.
Our read along highlighted the need for more positive representation of disability in children’s literature. This is one of the reasons RNIB has published Red and the Wolf, which features a visually impaired heroine. Red and the Wolf is a reimagining of fairy tale favourite Little Red Riding Hood. In our book, Red can’t see very well but that doesn’t stop her overcoming the challenges she faces. The book comes with an audio version, including special sound effects so children can listen to the story and read along with the story.
Rhiannon, aged 4, took part in the read along and tells us she loved reading Red and the Wolf and has asked to read it again at bedtime. She especially loved that the character is called Red, as Rhiannon has red hair, is also severely sight impaired and is learning to use a long cane too.
